Amanita Muscarias Legends, Traditions and Fairy Tales

Amanita Muscarias history and tradition are some of the richest and most interesting of the herbs and ethnobotanicals on the market today.  With origins from the indigenous inhabitants of Siberia, the fly agaric mushroom was used for both religious and recreational purposes.  It appears that, even within Siberia, use of the Amanitas was limited to the Paleosiberian-speaking and Uralic-speaking people in the eastern and western regions only.

In the earliest stories of it’s use, Siberian shamans ate the amanitas as a means to induce a trance-like state.  This state would enable the shamans to “fly” into the world of their gods, have fantastic visions and battle demons.  The laypeople, in many cases, would then drink the urine of the shamans, which still contained much of the psychoactive compound and, interestingly, was neutralized of many of the

negative side effects of the fly agarics.   The muscimol amounts would be almost unchanged after passing through the body and it was said that the same mushroom could be “recycled” 6-8 times.  Some scholars even argue that this is the origin of the phrase “to get pissed”.

Also, many ancient peoples believed in the idea of a World Tree.  The World Tree would be the center of the cosmos with the roots holding the universe in place.  Amanita muscaria only grow under certain types of trees, generally firs and evergreens, many considered the mushroom to be the “fruit of the tree”.   The star at the top of the “Christmas Tree” would point to the North Star, which was the center of the universe, and why the “super shaman” – Santa – lived at the North Pole.

Finally, there are notions that the Vikings may have used amanita muscaria to produce their berserker rages, getting them ready for battle.  There is also controversial research linking Christianity to a mushroom-eating cult, which is highly questionable.   Others support R. Gordon Wasson’s proposal that A. muscaria is the Soma talked about in the Rig Veda of India, but that has also not been proven.

As people far and wide begin to latch on to all of the fantastic ways to legally “get high” and explore their spiritual side, the official buzz killers among us, ie – government, will continue to find ways to make access to these things illegal.  So, Amanita muscaria, or Fly agaric, sure looks like the cats ass, but is it legal?

In a word? Yes!  As a general rule, Amanita muscaria are sold on ethnobotanical sites with strong disclaimers that they are to be used for “collection, education and research purposes” only and that they are not sold for human consumption.  What you chose to do with these products in the safety of your home is entirely up to you.  Fly agaric contain three powerful psychoactive agents: bufotenine, muscarine, and atropine.   Those that do choose to consume the mushrooms generally do so by eating them or boiling them and making a tea to drink.  Fly agaric will generally come in dried caps, which are fine for storage, or a powder which is a concentrated extract.

There are many reasons why Amanita muscaria remains legal in most parts of the world.  Little is known about the long term effects of its use.  However, it has been shown that dependency on fly agaric is not an issue.  Additionally, while it does have psychoactive properties, it doesn’t contain psilocin or psilocybin, which are considered to be quite dangerous.  Additionally, the fact that it is not being sold for “human consumption” is a big factor in it’s remaining legal in most parts of the world.

What is Fly Agaric? With all of the talk about “legal highs” these days, people keep digging a little bit deeper and striking “gold” in the form of Salvia, Kratom, and now Fly Agaric, or Amanita muscaria.   The Amanitas muscaria are a large mushroom that generally grows in clusters and may be anywhere from the size of a golf ball to bigger than both of your hands.  Most have bright red caps with white wharts and, if separated, you’d find a yellow layer of skin.  A mature fly agaric mushroom is usually 3 to 8 inches in size, but some have grown to be very large.

Depending on weather conditions and age of the mushroom, the top of the fungus may change from red to yellow.  The mushroom is often mistaken for other species, which can be quite dangerous for those who go in search of this one.  Some Amanita strains can be consumed and other are considered to be poisonous.  The Amanitas muscaria can be found in most parts of the world and it tends to adapt to trees, pines and other woodland plants well.   It does adapt well to warm climates and has been spreading in the rainforest of Australia, among other spots.
